Kushti (wrestling) in Dubai

Kushti means wrestling (in Pakistani I believe) and each friday evening, in the Deira area of Dubai, Pakistani labourers gather to either participate in or watch the action.

Its a weird mix of strong men, theatre, sand and bagpipes and is definitely worth a look if your in town. As well as being a very different photo opportunity its also a great and very different cultural experience, not the normal Dubai style day out

I found out about it through a Gulf Photo Plus organised photo walk. Here are a couple of my very few decent shots.

Others can be found here along with photo information in the picasa pageshttps://picasaweb.google.com/ianganderton/20110520GPPPhotoWalkDubaiFishVegtableFruitMarketPlusKushtiWrestling?authkey=Gv1sRgCKXLr9HR1dGj9QE&feat=directlink

It was a learning day for me. New camera and trying to think about the photos I was taking which is not normally something I’d do.

I know these arent great photos but I’m not displeased with them, they tell a nice story I think. CC welcome but go a bit easy on me Razz

  1. Hi Ian

I think the last photo is very good. Is this held near the Deira fish market?

I think we met at Umm Al Quwain mangroves last year, I was paddling some folding kayaks.

    1. Craig – Yes it is the wrestling held down in Deria by the fish market, we were actually at the fish market first. Thanks for the complement.

It was Pete, my boss, you met at Umm Al Quwain. Are you getting out and about plenty in your kayaks?

      Ian

    1. Hi Mike,

Just had a look at the EXIF data on the photos its looks like its between 6 and 7 in the evening. This might change as the days get a bit shorter.

  2. great … thanks Ian.

I am planning to go on Friday with my other phioto hobbyist friends, I hope no “legal papers” or something like “permit” require to take photos.

    Thanks again!

    1. Cool,

I was with Gulf Photo Plus and they did have the, some times asked for, permits. I have a feeling you’ll have no problems down there though, its not like your in a mall or anything.

There are lots of sports being played in the area including football and cricket. You’ll have a great time with the cameras.

Could you post a link on here to your photos when you get the chance? I’d love to check them out.

      Ian
