Pics from the weekends surf safari to Oman

Just a quick post to show some photos from the weekends surf trip to Oman. 4 fantastic days organised by Carl of Surf Shop Dubai and Surf Adventures UAE.

As you can see in the photos Joes Point was a beautiful location with a great variety of waves suitable for everyone- beginners (me), shredders (Carl), long boards, short boards and SUPs.

Carl has more trips running to Joes Point, Oman, as well as surf adventures to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. After this weekend I’d give a full thumbs up and recommend anyone to make the most of Carls expertise and get themselves on one of his trips.

Hyperfocal distance card for download

In my quest to learn to be a better photographer I’ve come across the concept of hyperfocal distance. In this post I’m going to look at what I’ve learnt, how I’m using it with my Canon 550D and provide a handy little downloadable spreadsheet aide memoir.

Wikipedia says ‘In optics and photography, hyperfocal distance is a distance beyond which all objects can be brought into an “acceptable” focus’. Its the way of getting the maximum depth of field in an image.

Lets go surfing now, everybody’s learning how, come on a safari with me….

My problem has always been I’m a kayaker! Since I first sat in a boat when I was 9 its meant the instant gratification of catching a wave without needing to stand up has always been open to me. As I got more experienced I was able to move on to paddle skis and surf at some great breaks.

BUT

I’ve always had a hankering to be able to stand up and eventually I’m getting round to making the effort. Next weekend I’m heading to Oman with Carl and Surf Adventures UAE and I’m really looking forward to it.

Kushti (wrestling) in Dubai

Kushti means wrestling (in Pakistani I believe) and each friday evening, in the Deira area of Dubai, Pakistani labourers gather to either participate in or watch the action.

Its a weird mix of strong men, theatre, sand and bagpipes and is definitely worth a look if your in town. As well as being a very different photo opportunity its also a great and very different cultural experience, not the normal Dubai style day out

Lets talk about….. Adventure

Adventure is something I know I’m passionate about, I can feel myself get animated when I talk about it. It inspires me, motivates me, makes me laugh, smile or even cry when I see people affected by it. Looking back when it’s not in my life I feel unhappy, dissatisfied and ill at ease with myself although I often wont realise that’s what the probable cause is at the time.

I’ve never been much of a writer but generating the posts on this blog has been really interesting and now, for some reason, I feel a need to write about my thoughts on adventure. Not quite sure where this will go, where it will end or how it will be recieved (if I press the publish button of course). Guess its just a different kind of adventure! Let me know what you think in the comments at the end please 🙂 Continue reading “Lets talk about….. Adventure”
